esprit de corps – a theatrical experiment PREVIEW
South Pasadena Theatre Workshop is opening a new play with movement called Esprit de Corps, which will run from June 9th to July 9th.
The theatre, housed in what was formally the warehouse of the old nursery building located at 1507 El Centro Street was transformed into a blackbox theatre in 2010 and has hosted many classes, workshops, youth conservatories , musical events and theatrical offerings, most recently a successful production of Third by Wendy Wasserstein. We are excited to be offering a new work written by Sally Smythe, the co-artistic director of the workshop who has forty years of theatrical experience. This is her first play. Reservations for Esprit de Corps can be made on line at southpasadenatheatreworkshop.com There will also be some tickets available at the door for cash only first come first serve.
Esprit de Corps is an ensemble piece and features actors with a strong movement background. The play, set in hard times in an unspecified location, concerns itself with a community that gathers to create theatrical movement pieces in hard times. There are issues of initiation, the sacrifices involved in creating art and the resistance and ultimately the surrender that feeds their creativity. Much of the choreography is being created in real time with a sense of kinesthetic awareness. The director and I wanted to develop a container in which the characters in the play transition from their everyday life into the world of compositional movement. We employed some of the disciplines from the Viewpoints, a movement coming out of the modern dance community and further developed by Tina Landau and Ann Bogart as well as other creative disciplines to achieve a sense of esprit de corps within the group.
