The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is spotlighting works by fine artist Deborah van der Zaag and photographer David Johnston in two new exhibitions at the SPARC Gallery at South Pasadena City Hall, 1414 Mission St., South Pasadena. Free to the public, both exhibitions will run through October 12, 2019, with an opening reception to be held August 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Deborah van der Zaag’s abstract oil paintings combine both representational and non-representational imagery, speaking a personal language of spatial relationships between color, line, space and value. David Johnston, who uses a toy camera to deliberately capture images that are not always technically perfect, resulting in serendipitous, slice-of-life street scenes.

(SPARC’s Chamber Gallery exhibition, “Textiles Today, Exploring the Possibilities,” at the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, 1121 Mission St., South Pasadena, has extended through October 12, 2019.)

City Hall Gallery hours: Monday-Thursday, 8 to 5 p.m.; Friday, 8 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. SPARC Gallery exhibitions are curated by Richard Blue Trimarchi of Art Works Fine Art Publishing.

SPARC Gallery, with exhibition spaces at South Pasadena City Hall and the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, is a project of the South Pasadena Arts Council, a non-profit arts organization. For more information on SPARC’s programs, please visit www.sopasartscouncil.org.
